The origin of each painting varies significantly. I may start with a concept, a particular image, or sometimes just a color or shape, often inspired by an earlier piece of mine. From this initial spark, I cultivate the content, paying close attention to shifts in meaning and emotion created by the inclusion and juxtaposition of image and shape, paying close attention to shifts in meaning created by the inclusion, juxtaposition and interplay of images and forms. I surround myself with a diverse range of visual references, such as botanical illustrations, photographs, sketches, textiles, hand-printed papers, and, of course, my own previous creations.
